Mariah Carey ft Miguel - Beautiful Analysis

The genre of this song would be Pop/R 'n' B and it does fit into many of the characteristics that these genres share. With most pop songs the artist must appear to be enjoying their lives and having a good time which is evident from the very beginning of this video as we see the main singer, Mariah Carey, laughing and smiling whilst on the back of the motorbike. Also with most R 'n' B songs the women appear to be wearing very little clothing and the men are seen almost to be more superior than them as they can do whatever they want. For example in this video we see Mariah Carey who, even though this is her song, is wearing a very short dress and Miguel is just sat in his car watching her dance for him which is very typical of the R 'n' B genre.

The first line of the song is simply 'Hop on to the back of my bike/ Let the good wind blow through your hair' and surprisingly enough you see Mariah Carey on the back of Miguel's motorbike and what we, as directors, assume to be a fan that makes it look as if the wind is blowing in her hair. This is very simply copying exactly what the lyrics are saying and shows that the lyrics are very important to the making of the video.

This video is shot in a very much 'male gaze' type of style in that Mariah is very much sexualised throughout it. In the whole of the video she is wearing very minimal clothing and there are lots of close-ups onto her body, for example choosing to focus on her legs and bum at completely inappropriate times. On the other hand Miguel is shown to be very much in power of her as in the last shot he calls her to him whilst in the car and this is the first time she has got close to him. Also the fact that he is riding the motorbike and is sat in a Porsche whilst she is stood on her own shows that he has all the money and is able to do what he wants whilst she follows. This however is all very typical of the genre and must be taken with a pinch of salt!

This video is mostly performance based as there is lots of dancing and lip syncing to the song however it does have elements of performance as we start to make assumptions about the relationship status of the two characters in question and start to piece together a sort  of story/background for them.
