Wiley and Voyerism
Goodwin’s theory of voyeurism refers to the idea of expressing a sense of sexuality in media texts, deliberately to catch the audience’s attention and to gain sexual pleasure for both genders. This idea is mainly aimed at males (Laura Mulvey's Male Gaze theory) where female artists will be sexually provocative to keep the audience’s eyes fixed on the screen. Goodwin argues that females will be objectified in this way by doing such things as revealing sexual parts of their body and by wearing revealing clothes. As well as this, camera angles such as low angle shots and close ups help to emphasise this.
One very Voyeristic-ly shot music video is the video for Heatwave - Wiley which consists of a montage of clips being taken at what seems to be a pool party where the majority of the shots are close ups of either women's face's, chest area or their bum. The reason behind this is too attract and engage the audience by showing off their bodies, so it makes girls want to be like them and the boys will want to be with them. Wiley is the singer of the song so the idea of having all of the half naked women around him in their swim wear helps to portray the idea that he is living the 'star life'. This is also seen in the camera work in the music video as a lot of the time when Wiley is being filmed a low angle shot is used, looking up at Wiley to show his importance. Wileys status is further shown by him being surrounded by dancing girls in their bikinis as he raps some of the song. Another thing that increases this idea of the male gaze is the fact that some of the clips of the women dancing around have been slowed down so that their movements can be focused on as well as their bodies. A close up shot of a piece of ice in a girls mouth is shown at one point; her lips are quite pink and lips can be seen as an attractive part of women so focusing on that as well is helping to intimidate the audience in a sexual manner. For some of the clips, a red/orange/yellow 'glow' is used around the frame as they change as they are the 3 main colours associated with fire and heat. This is used to help connote that the party is 'hot' and also to fit in with the name of the song 'heatwave'.
