Jessie Ware - Night Light Analysis

This song is Night Light by Jessie Ware and the genre this song fits into is pop however it doesn't fit into many of the conventions of pop music. The video is filmed purely in black and white which is different to what most pop music videos are as usually they try and make the scene look as bright as possible in order to attract a younger audience. They are also conventionally supposed to looking happy and enjoying themselves in their videos to give off the impression that this is a happy and exciting song for people to dance to however this video is the opposite, with the artist looking pretty glum throughout and the colouring of the black and white increases this sense of melancholy. Although on the other hand you could argue that it does follow some of the conventions with the theme of the song being about love and relationships and with there being a lot of dancing in a seductive and sensual way which is very common with pop songs.

Despite the obvious connection of the lip syncing to the song, there is very little actual relationship between lyrics and visuals due to the fact that the video is mainly a dance performance video and their being only a very subtle narrative happening. However saying this there is a big connection between the music and the visuals mainly due to some of the dance moves that happen throughout. For example at the beginning its starts by you being able to hear just the one instrument and the screen shows Jessie Ware dancing seductively on her own. There are also dancers around her who are still until the next instrument comes in when they start dancing/moving aswell. This is a clear example of the connection between music and visuals and shows just how important this is in the production of a dance based music video.

Throughout the video it is obvious who the artist is, even from the start you can see her stood up with lots of dancers sat in a circle around her showing the audience that she is the most important person in the shot. There are also lots of close ups of her face whilst she is singing to show everyone who exactly the artist as she is fairly new to the music scene so the producer would want to advertise her as much as possible. There is a little bit of voyeuristic treatment of the female body as all the dancers are wearing very little clothing eg. just a bra and leggings. However unlike the Wiley video we watched this seems more artistic and less like we are meant to be 'taking advantage' of females.
