The Script - Nothing Analysis

The genre this song fits into is the Alternative Rock genre and the video does not stick to many of the conventions that we have found when looking at Rock videos. Unlike many rock music videos, you don't ever see any of the instruments being played but the video is very much shot as purely narrative (something many rock bands use in their videos) with some hints at performance when he starts to lip sync. The video does however encompass all the members of the band in it, with Danny being the main character whilst the others are merely friends, to not only show us the bands unity which is important to many rock bands and is included in their videos but also to show that although they are all in the band Danny is most certainly the leader. 

In this video there doesn't appear to be much connection between lyrics and visuals but I did find that when Danny sings 'As they take me to my local down the street' we see him sat in a pub/bar with his friends downing an alcoholic beverage. There is also a connection between the fact that he is lip syncing to the song and describing himself as being drunk which is depicted in the music video as he stumbles down the street.

The band are the main focus in the video and are the only characters apart from the other girl who is dancing in the water. As this is the case you don't see a lot of other people and there are lots of close ups on the band members, especially Danny, as the video goes on. This would be to show they are the most important and so re-emphasis the fact that they are the band members and that what the video is there for is to promote the song/band. 

The very first shot we see is that of a women in the water and it looks as though we are watching her from below. Although she is only on the screen for a couple of seconds she is moving very delicately and even from this we already know this is going to be from a male's point of view because of the male voyeurism that is taking place. They also use the colour red for the dress she is wearing which has huge connotations to sexuality and lust to show she is the desired girl in the video.
