What Even Is Synaesthesia?

The idea of syneasthesia, is a 'process of picturing sounds in the minds eye'. This could also be known as 'thought beats' or 'seeing sounds in your head', where the sounds or letters of a word form colours within the mind.

Andrew Goodwin (1993) - Synaethesia is... (dancing in the distraction factory)

'a clip that responds to the pleasures of music, and in which that music is made visual, either in new ways that accentuate existing visual associations'

As a class, we took part in an activity so that we could understand synaethesia ourselves. We were asked to listen to two songs - Tina Moore, 'Never Gonna Let You Go' and Phoria 'Red' - whilst we listened to them, we had to draw what we felt as the song was playing. As they came to a finish we decided that the first song we listened to by Tina Moore was more angular through our drawings and this reflected the rough beat that was used in the song. It was very much dance music and the drawings also showed that aspect of it. The second one, however, produced very curly lines that in a way reflected the soft, continuous, flowing nature of the song. Then in groups split into two, we were asked to give our ideas, based on their drawings, how we would approach creating a music video for this. We got given the task of the slower one and below are our ideas:

We could see water and the band perhaps playing underwater, as they try to find their instruments which are strewn across the water scene. It wouldn't feature much of a narrative other than the continuous nature of the water and the slow motion nature of everything that is concealed beneath the water. This would mean that there wouldn't need to be too much editing because the slow motion beneath the water is very natural. The colours would be a juxtaposition to the title of the song, because we would be focusing on the idea of blue water and calmness.
