James Morrison - I Won't Let You Go Analysis

This song fits into the pop rock genre of music and in this sense it is very hard to say whether it fits into specific characteristics of the genre as there is no real definite answer! However after watching the music video you can see that there are hints of each genre for example the video and the lyrics are all to do with James Morrison's love for this girl, lyrics concerning love and relationships being one of the main characteristics of pop music. Like many rock videos there appears to be a substantial amount of close-ups during it of both James and the main girls face. There is also a direct narrative running through the whole video based on the relationship between the artist and the girl but it does also stray from the norm as there is no live footage of the performer or is there the use of bright, bold colours to attract a younger audience like many pop videos tend to have.

Throughout most of the video James Morrison is lip syncing the words of the song to make it clear from the start that he is the artist and most important in the scene as he seems to have control over what is happening. At one point in the video he says 'its no time to be alone/I won't let you go' and at this point you see both the girl in the road and the man in the bedroom as he talks about being alone and then for the 'I won't let you go' you see the man walk over to the window and look out at her to show that he is always looking after her even when they are alone. In this sense there is a big connection between the lyrics and visuals but then you could argue that the video is slightly conceptual becuause of the fact that it ends with everyone together lying on the floor, an unconventional way for the music video to end.

It could be argued that, although you do see a lot of the main artist in the video as he is the main male actor aswell that the main focus of the video is on the girl and the enigma behind why she is lying on the floor. You get this impression from the close-ups of each of her movements and her facial expressions as she lies on the floor, however she seems to be in a sort of trance like state wheras the artist, James Morrison, appears to very much have the power and control in the situation. There is also lots of references to the notion of looking as most of the end half of the video is based on lots of different people stood around the girl on the floor looking at what she is doing.
